I continue to flail on the ground, shouting, "No, not shackles! We must have unfettered capitalism!"

In D&D5E, I usually play a spell caster of some kind, so I don't have to roll to hit to be effective--I just have no luck with dice. Plus I usually DM, so for dramatic effect, I can fudge dice rolls as needed behind the screen.

One of my players has the worst luck with dice I have ever seen. The first character he played in our group was a paladin. I swear, he never hit once. He still had lots of fun, because he enjoyed roleplaying his character. During his horrible rolling streaks, other players would lend them their dice, which for them rolled average, but in his hands, they would only roll 1, 2, or 3s.

On the other hand, my son--who has played with my tabletop group since he was a teenager--has the most luck with dice I have ever seen. He rolls more natural 20s in one evening than I roll in an entire year. No trick dice or rolling techniques, just luck. I watched him roll three natural 20s in a row in one fight.

When I'm DMing, on the nights he goes out, when he returns home, the players beg him to jump into the game and save them. And he usually does.

Invariably he plays a character that can benefit greatly from critical hits, usually a rogue or a barbarian.

The last adventure we played through was a high level adventure, 5th edition, levels 15-20, and somebody else was DMing. Player characters were allowed one legendary item. So he took in a bear totem barbarian with a vorpal weapon. And 5th edition vorpal weapons are like earlier editions... you roll a natural 20, and the enemy's head is cut off. He was a unstoppable whirlwind of destruction.

From the ground, I flail at my enemy wildly.

Dio, I'm going to pass on that healing word; possibly Teshi will let you retarget it? Mari's insubstantial to all types of damage except force and psychic, so even after the hits she took from B, she's only down 10 HP. With only two surges, I need to make the most of them. Sorry, I really should have explained this properly earlier.

That's ok. I didn't know you could self-heal.
55
[Dio said he attacked the wounded one, and only C1 was wounded at that point!]

[Right, C1, assuming they were the one I wounded previously. Also, Mari is passing on the Healing Word. Retarget or fizzle? I can apply overheal as temp hp if somebody wants and you're in range. Astra maybe?]
56
"You are in the red!" I cry, bringing my hammer down on my wounded foe with one hand, gesturing to Val and Mari with the other. "And you are in the black!"

I have a couple surgeless healing spells, but the range is touch.
58
Am I up?
59
I'll drop a couple heals on my next turn--I should have line-of-sight now.
60
Surprise humorous loot is cool, but if there is a dwarven thrower of some kind, I'm good with that.

"You leave me no choice but to demonstrate that Kol Korran is no fiction. Unless you mean a useful legal fiction like corporate personhood, or something abstract like markets. Yes, markets! Feel his Invisible Hand!"

I grasp Coinstriker from my belt and swing it in a flashing gold arc. Glowing currency symbols settle upon Astra and other nearby allies.

"Unhand me, debtors," I shout at the two who have seized me, struggling to shrug them off. "I am a priest of Kol Korran! Would you have the currency of your characters judged counterfeit?"

[I guess I would be over at C8, since I sat close to the fire. My mount would be stabled, I think.]

Her eyes widen at the coin, and she flashes Oleg a nervous smile.  "Oh, no, nothing like that," she says, with forced casualness.  Her back to the other patrons, she mouths be careful.  She gives a tiny wave of a finger to indicate the four cloaked figures, then subtly points to the corner of her eye as she pushes her hair back - they're watching.
"Oh, I see."

Well... they look like a cheerless lot. What to do, what to do...

"Ma'am, a round on me for the gentlemen in the corner."

Storm King's Thunder hardcover adventure for 5e. Looks like an adventure with giants that isn't a rehash of Against the Giants. And a new 5e monster book I think. No word on new setting material yet (like Eberron for 5th edition :( ).

I grin and say, "Oh, a beer would do nicely, ma'am."

I take a seat close to the fire. "I'm supposed to meet someone here. I hope I haven't missed them. Has anyone arrived or left here recently, perhaps alone?"

I pay for my beer with a gold coin.

Seems they've been holed up in there for a spell. Still, no use skulking about. As if I could skulk at all in this jangly mail.

I shrug and give the door a try, letting out a cheerful, "Hallooo? Kol Korran's wealth be with you."

I nod and ride off towards the roadhouse, keeping an eye out for trouble, knowing keener eyes watch my back.

Kol Korran, protect your servant.

"Right. Let's rendezvous with Leatherleaf's replacement," I say, prodding the lizard forward towards the roadhouse.

"Oleg, I thought our plan was to reconnoiter the bridge and observe the target." I remind the chaplain.

And not stumble into trap.

"Ah, yes. I was getting ahead of myself."

I look around at our team. We appear to be alert and at the ready.

"Right. Let's rendezvous with Leatherleaf's replacement," I say, prodding the lizard forward towards the roadhouse.
72
"Hmm... yes... I have seen goats leaping in the Ironroot Mountains, myself. And I trust your judgement on this. The animal has my approval."
73
"Palatinate," I say, quizzically eyeing the horned beast, while leaning in to whisper to the sergeant, "does this creature offer some tactical benefit to our mission?"

Our business concluded, I whistle a quiet hymn to myself while walking back to our company.

She seemed bemused by the whole transaction. That's alright. At least she is happier and wealthier than when we arrived. Ah yes, the Sacrement of Exchange, the Miracle of Currency, the True Meaning of Money--that's what life is all about.

Arriving back at the barn, I inform the others. "Our business here is done. We may depart."
75
"The undying lady? Ah yes, thank you. I wasn't sure how she tallied into this. Let see..."

I sweep the beads of the steel abacus hanging from my belt to one side, then flick several this way and that.

"Hmmm... five heads at three silver a piece... plus 10 percent gratuity... that comes to... one gold, six silver, five copper."

I scribble the total on my receipt pad. "I've taken the liberty of writing a receipt on behalf of your establishment. If you wouldn't mind putting your mark here, please, and you can keep a copy for your own records, in case a tax collector pays you a visit."

I count out a dozen coins from the pouch to her, "And here is your payment. Kol Korran's blessings be with you and good day, ma'am."
