Messages - Teshi

The night passes wholly uneventfully except for various looky-loos traveling the highway stopping to ogle the remains of the fire.  Dawn breaks cold and clear over the smouldering remains of the building and over your camp, a rime of crystalline frost deposited over every cool surface offering a warning of incipient harsher weather.

[Where are you off to?]

Okay, you lot need to decide where you're going next, so I can implement Phase Whatever This Is Now.  Do you want some concrete options to choose from, or do you feel like you know what your PCs will do next just based on the story so far?
28
jussr, I think we should have a contest to caption your avatar.

It's a bit experimental.  But I figured Martin can be relied upon to follow the spirit of the rules.

SEE WHAT I DID THERE

"That's...complicated," I reply. "Even I don't understand it all. I'm not physically bound to it; there doesn't seem to be anything stopping me from going as far away as I like. I just don't like to. It's important I stay close to it."

Translation:  the rules don't specify, and the DM decided that being too specific about how far a PC can separate from another PC would be an unnecessary pain in the ass, lol

Seeing everybody else otherwise occupied, I pop the journal down in front of me and start leafing through it.

[Insight check on the contents: 20 + 14 = 34]

The journal is written in a casual scrawl by a single author, who doesn't give his or her name.  Some excerpts that jump out at you:

I'm sure keeping a diary is a violation of operational protocols, but I just have to write these things out to sort them out in my mind.  That's me, too big an egghead to succeed in the regular army, not a big enough egghead to get sent off to research exploding things or zombie maintenance or whatever.  The weird thing about this mission is that four of the five of us are frankly screw-ups, myself included.  It makes me uneasy.  Well, I'll burn this diary when we're done here - no one needs to know about this little lapse of judgment...

...Found out that our outlier, the only one of our little party that could honestly be described as one of His Majesty's Finest, slept with his commander's wife.  So that explains why he's here.  Why would the general potentially trust his son's life to the bunch of us?  Anastasia agrees that it doesn't add up, and that we need to watch our backs...

...We got to talking about this artifact we're after, and Anastasia admitted she'd heard of it before.  She says her uncle is into this stuff, which I think is secret code for he's an unsanctioned necromancer.  At least, I sure hope that's what it's code for, ha.  She says she used to sneak peeks at his books, and she read about this Skeleton Hand thing - it's a mythical artifact that makes a person the leader of the undead, whatever that means.  She didn't recall the details, but I can sure see why our army'd want to keep that in their own hands!...

...Anastasia and I decided to secretly write her uncle.  This whole mission is too strange, and we need some reliable information.  And I have to admit I like the idea of SOMEONE knowing we're out here.  I feel like we've already disappeared off the face of the plane.  It's only Irontown, so hopefully we'll get a reply pretty quick.  This guy's parents named him Fraedus Hellekanus, if you can believe that.  It's like they WANTED him to grow up to be a creepy secret necromancer...

...The captain thinks we're being trailed by someone.  I really hope that's just paranoia talking.  I've got second watch, so I really ought to get some sleep, but

That diary entry, the last in the book, ends abruptly.

"Yes, hmm... yes," I ponder, turning the crystal tumbler in my hand, its facets sparkling from the nearby flames. "They spoke of the 'Divine Light' and wielded radiance as a weapon against us. They spoke of us as heathen, though in their midst I had introduced myself to the innkeeper as a priest of Kol Korran.  So I would assume they were not believers of the Sovereign Host. Their accents..."

[Just wanted to let you know I didn't miss this.  I wrote some journal entries out but they're on my computer at home - will post them later today :) ]

"Sirs," I acknowledge as the two (apparently) officers stride by me.

Hells.

I disappear into the dusk for a time, hunting game for the evening's repast.

[Nature: 19+13 = 32]

Does Khorvaire have moose?  If so, congrats, you shot a nice fat one.

[How about a few brace of fat pheasants instead?  I don't think Pepper has time to dress a moose and still get in an extended rest.]

[Sure, why not.  Wouldn't want Pepper getting arrested for Wanton Waste.]

[History check for whether Karlach has heard any rumours of this sort before in his career/social circle: 13+11=24]

It is well-known that ir'Dulinch favors a much more hawkish approach and is one of those who speaks nostalgically of the innovative and aggressive policies of the king's grandfather, Kaius I.  These are fairly common stances among both the nobility and the military elite, though, so they have not led to widespread speculation about Dulinch's loyalty.

I was like, "what elf?"

I have been slow lately

[Pepper searches the stables for the weapons and gear: Perception: 5+13+2 = 20]

Your weapons are all there.  The only thing missing is Val's highwayman getup.  There's also a scrap of paper that simply says, Redemption is possible, pawns, the name "Melindri," and a street address in Korth.
39
[I encourage you guys to figure out where your party is headed next, and to take your extended rest.]

Level 6:

Next one is the level up & booty bump.  If you haven't already sent me your wishlist, you might wish to do so soon!

As the soldiers are conversing, Ebba comes galloping up on the pony, face panicked - she could see the fire from some distance.  Her expression loses the panic but stays confused as she sees her father is safe.  "What happened?" he blurts, as he hurries over to her.   Reaching up to give her shoulder a relieved squeeze, he says, "We can talk about it later.  These drovers are giving us a lift away from this," he says, with an emphasis on the last, and she nods understanding.  She knees the pony over to join the  wagon, and her father hops aboard the wagon with the cargo as the drovers click to their horses to move out.

As Karlach speaks he is making his way over to the courier, and hands the letter to him along with a galifar.  "Please see this delivered with all haste; dismissed," he tells him.

The courier gives a brief bow, hops onto his leggy horse, and takes off.

"So," the chatty drover says, taking stock of the situation, "Looks like there's not much for us to do but let the fire burn itself out, eh?  Anyone need a ride?  We're heading east."

"I have relations that way, if you'll wait a bit for my daughter," the innkeeper says, making haste over to their wagon, separating himself from the combatants.
43
[When you break the seal the letter is indeed as he says, though you'll have to wait for teshi for any actual details beyond that!]

[It's a brief note stating that the bearer of the letter has been issued orders to join you in your mission, with General ir'Dulinch's signature and seal.]

[5 plus whatever my modifier is.  Brand new phone]
The manacles snap off, but accompanied by a distinct crack of bone.  "Sorry, mate," the drover winces.  "I did warn you."  [-5 HP]

[Endurance Roll(1d20)+6: 14,+6, Total:20]
  Freed!
46
With a resounding metallic crack, the manacles snap loose and Astra is freed unscathed.  The drover goes around offering her assistance to Oleg and Val as well.  [Endurance check as well, if you'd like her help!]
47
[Give me an endurance check.  You can have a +2 for the rock, lol.]
48
With a snort, the chatty drover returns with a crowbar and a lever, and tells Astra cheerfully, "Hold out your arms.  I'll try not to crack any bones."

[Intimidate to get the courier to wait before departing: 10+13+2=25

The courier pauses, obviously not thrilled about it.

[As long as it is currently dark and not on fire. What time is it?]

[We've got to be heading into evening now, don't you guys think?  Should be temporarily safe for Val to travel shortly.]

It seems Pepper does not know said trick.  Val remains shackled.

[I was about to ask if having the tools now gives me advantage on the roll for thievery, but that's 5e.  Brain, brain, what is brain.  How do the tools figure into freeing Val and Oleg?  +X to strength to break the manacles or +X to Thievery to pick open the manacles?]

Quote
Thieves' Tools
Category: Gear
Price: 20 gp
Weight: 1 lb
Description: To use the Thievery skill properly, you need the right picks and pries, skeleton keys, clamps, and so on. Thieves' tools grant a +2 bonus to Thievery checks to open a lock or to disable a trap.

[I don't see them in Pepper's inventory, though.

I'm fine with you guys just sweet-talking the drovers into cracking off the manacles, if your characters aren't up to extricating themselves.  The manacles aren't magic or anything and drovers are burly tough people, right?]
