I instinctitively recoil, colliding with the wall, when the woman - ghost - appears.  "What the fuck," I choke out, making a sign to ward off evil.
377
I salute the general, then wait for the others to precede me as I eye the shadowed corner the mysterious voice came from earlier.
378
Astra: Common, Dwarven
379
for the love of the gods, someone who can read please perception check that book
380
Great, so now we know how big the blob of dirt on the page actually is.

"You said there was other names for it, m'lord?" I press.  "Ones locals might use, maybe?"

[Diplomacy: 16+2+1=19 to seem respectful/not offend anyone by harping on this!]
381
I clear my throat reluctantly.

"Begging your pardon, sirs, ma'ams," I say, voice careful.  "But how are we supposed to find something we don't know what is?"
382
I just feel that a "Target: Each undead creature in the burst" power could turn out to be really special.
383
Diogenes, can I put in a vote for you taking Turn Undead instead of Smite Undead?  :)
384
You got a death wish or something as well as broken ears? I think, subtly stepping away from the corporal a little.
385
I blush again.
386
I don't mind killing people, I just hate being told to kill specific people. Takes away my agency.
Buddy, you are in the wrong job.
387
He already said we could ask questions now, you giant arsekisser, I think, rolling my eyes behind the hair falling forward over my hastily ducked face.
388
If Astra could recognise an eladrin by sight, she's be questioning right now if this was the absolute best mission to bring one along for.  Just, y'know, silently.
389
I eye the general carefully as he starts talking about his missing kid, wondering if there's more to it than he's saying.  Probably not that far off the truth if the little lord was on assignment too, even if half the time it seems like "my kid's gone missing" actually turns out to be "my kid's run off to marry that floozy from the next village over."  Or got eaten by Nightwood monsters, either one.  Any case, it's getting to be pretty clear now why they wanted me for this job.

[Insight check: 17+5=22 for if it seems there's more to his son's disappearance than he's telling us]

"If people took your son, m'lord, you just want him back, or d'you want who did it dead too?" I ask practically.
390
My head whips over to the corner the laughter came from and I peer into it instead, hand unconsciously straying towards one of the handaxes strapped to my side.

[Perception: 11+10=21]
391
I look uncertainly at General ir'Dulinch, but don't dare ask any more questions.  I do start carefully shuffling backwards again to be near the door, though.
392
"M'lord?" I respond absently, automatically, as I squint at the corner.  I snap my eyes back to him when I realise I really should be paying better attention to the general in the room and dig my nails into my palms.  "At your command, sir," I reply flatly.  And if you want me to pretend I'm happy about it, that's too fucking bad.
393
As I wait for the others to all play along with the general's game and pretend they want to go, I scan the room slowly and carefully, looking in particular for any clues as to what this might really be about.

[Perception: 20+10=30]
394
I have no idea!

I'd guess no, that he's a general in this context first and a lord second?
395
Oh, borealis: in this setting, the "ir'" prefix to the general's surname designates him as a member of the nobility, by the way.
396

eta: this doesn't include any impermanent bonuses from things like wearing footpads, conditional item bonuses, Shadow Walk, etc
397
Hey dio, can I get your untrained skill bonuses for my chart?
398
[lol well Astra's illiterate, so this one's all for Palatinate]
399
My neutral-yet-pissed-off expression disappears in favour of wide eyes that follow the book.

Like that, then, I guess.  You didn't have to fucking lie when you could just order me, morons.

I stop and look at the old woman woodenly.  "Yes, ma'am.  Your lordship," I add, eyes flicking to the General as well.
