Here we all are in order of rank, with our pay (not including things like food and uniform allowances); there are 28 days to the month and 12 months to the year.  Ten silver to the galifar/gold piece:

Major Gisaul Leatherleaf (2 gold/day)
Captain Oleg Olegov (1.5 gold/day)
Sergeant (First Class) Antigone Palatinate (5 silver/day)
Corporal Valenae (2 silver/day)
Soldier Astra (1 silver/day)

Combat pay is an additional 4.5 silver a month, regardless of rank, assuming teshi's happy with my using current US military pay regulations to work that one out.  And she had better be, because I have had enough of converting shillings and deciding on a value for the dollar when it crashed to half its previous worth over the course of five years because civil war, damnit.

"I ain't re-upping once I'm out, ma'am," I reply.  "Got one more year left."

[Astra's a soldier, by the way, not a sergeant!]

I am the very model of a modern major... :D

retired 20 years, re-enlisted for none of yer business currently. :D

Not in uniform, so no insignia.

lol that means you're in charge, congratulations

Sure, if everyone who hasn't done so wants to provide the information!

"The level of risk depends upon your level of competence," he says, tone severe but not precisely unkind, and adds,  "And yes, you will be eligible for combat duty pay."

I snort.  Then let out a fake cough, trying to pretend that was all I'd done before.  "Uh, pardon me," I say, clearing my throat.  "That's... very generous, sir."  Four and a half more silver each month and the chance to die, sign me up.  I start edging back towards the door again.  "And thanks for the... opportunity, but I'm okay just finishing out my regular service.  Sorry if I wasted your time and all."
406
"How high-risk, sir, and is there, uh... extra pay attached?" I ask.  "Because, I mean, I don't wanna die but if I can do it and it's..."  I trail off underneath his gaze.  "Not that, uh, serving Karrnath ain't worth it, sir, but I got other responsibilities, too."  I consider throwing in another 'sir' to be safe - what in the godsdamnedfucking hells am I doing here, talking to a general? - but on balance decide I'm okay.
407
"Permission to ask questions before saying, sir?" I ask after a moment.

Your defenses and attack bonus are a bit out of date because we get free feats that I forgot to give you, btw; should be 19 AC, 19 Fort, 17 Ref, 18 Will, and +11 to hit with your longbow.

Relevant info for the rest of us:
Within 10 squares of borealis, we get a +1 racial bonus to diplomacy.

If we can see and hear her (and are within 10 squares), we get a +2 power bonus to initiative.

When we can see her and we spend an action point to take an extra action, we regain hit points equal to one-half her level + her Charisma modifier (3 + 2 = 5).

If we have line of sight to her and use our second winds, we also gain temporary hit points equal to one-half her level + her Charisma modifier (3 + 2 = 5).

While traveling with her (see Explorer theme; what 'traveling' means here is a bit unclear, but I think it means significant journeying between places, not simply a constant bonus from her presence), we get a +2 power bonus to Endurance, and our group speed becomes the slowest group member's speed + 1.

I watch the new elf enter, unconsciously leaning forward a little in my seat, then blush violently and duck my head again when he glances my way as he crosses the room.  He has real nice hair.  And eyes, even if they don't got any white or black bits.

I relax into a slouch and sit back down, keeping my feet on the floor this time.  Much as I'd like to try and find out what's going on, can't imagine any captain'd take kindly to being questioned by some commoner soldier.  Patience, girl.
411
Oh gods, one of those.  He already forgot we're here, I bet.  No, no, don't bother yourself telling us to be at ease, sir, ain't like we been walking all day to get here or nothing.

I dip my head forward a little to let my hair hide the annoyed expression on my face.

Ah, fair enough; black clothing and a black uniform that's underneath armour probably look pretty similar, especially when you're all hunched over on yourself.
414
Chaos - basic soldier, not a civilian.  I edited my description post to reflect this.

Black's a good colour for the non-ranking Karrnathi soldier uniforms, right?
415
When the captain enters, I reluctantly push myself up and salute as he passes, my form skirting the edge of acceptable.  Better not push it too far.

[Oh, right:  You see a human girl in her late teens, of average height and a build that combines slightly-malnourised-skinny with the muscles of one accustomed to physical labour.  Her paleness is accentuated by the unrelieved black of her uniform, which clashes somewhat with the brown of her armour.  She has a plain sword sheathed on her belt, with a number of small throwing axes strapped in various spots.  Her aforementioned dirty blonde hair is lighter at the roots, as if it were once dyed darker and then washed out.  She looks rather grumpy at present, and sneaks peeks through her hair at the rest of the room.

She bears no marks of rank, and thus going by the uniform, is presumably a basic soldier.]

Captain, eh? Hmmm... I guess I could see this character getting promoted (too) quickly because he's a military chaplain who is an honest-to-gods cleric.
That (overly fast and undeserved authority/respect because she's a cleric) is pretty much exactly what happened to Lula as a priest lol
418
If they're an actual priest of the Sovereign Host (i.e., ordained by the Host church) I wouldn't expect them to be serving at all, given the government non-interference thing.  But clerics certainly don't have to be priests or accepted by the official church hierarchy in any way.  If Karrnath's army has military chaplains, I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to get a cleric in that position for the Host followers.  And probably lord it over the church, as well :D
Makes sense. I was thinking my character's calling came through a religious experience while serving in the Karrnath military.

While the Sovereign Host are distant gods when compared to pantheons outside of Eberron, it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to have a conversion experience of some kind, would it?

Hmm.  I think it'd depend on the experience?  Some outward miracle wouldn't be the sort of things the gods of the Host do (unless it's a miracle performed by a cleric, of course), but a more inward experience/presumed revelation, sure.

For my own cleric, Lula was brought up as a Host follower and started working to become a priest after watching her priest/cleric mentor healing people and otherwise being a great guy, because she wanted both structure and some sort of real accomplishment in her life.  Her cleric powers, healing in particular, manifested about six months or so later, when she was working to keep dying people alive with mundane approaches and was about to fail and lose someone.  It was a moment when she first had a genuine, deep faith, albeit one rather mixed with desperation, but she'd probably describe it simply as the gods choosing her to serve them.

So yeah, someone having a conversion experience that involved their powers manifesting would probably be fine, I'd think!
419
Teshi, you thought 16 for the age compulsory service would start, all else being equal, yeah?

Also, Astra:

"Ma'am," I mutter in acknowledgement of the implied order, unsuccessfully trying to repress my suspicious glare as I edge over towards one of the benches.  I sit down gingerly, pushing my pack underneath the seating, then after a moment pull my feet up onto the bench as well, knees hugged to my chest and my back to the corner.  My leather armour creaks at the movement and I rub at a worn spot on my leggings, dipping my head forward so my long, dirty blonde hair falls forward in a curtain, shielding my face from view.  General?  What is this bullshit, anyway?  Least it don't make sense they'd wait a year to execute me.

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
Hey dio, you still planning on a cleric?
424
D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
Blindfighting Sentinel and Blindfighting Warrior would take care of the combat disadvantages of the blinded condition except for inability to flank, so long as you were a melee fighter, but the bigger problem would be targeting enemies in the first place, I'd think; just because you're no longer taking -5 to hit doesn't mean they're not still invisible to you, so if they're capable of good stealth checks you could be in trouble.
