[Chaos, what about trying looking for a ladder in the stable?  Place like this out on its own, any roof leaks or whatever they'd need to be able to handle themselves, right?]

If we survive this, I hope Oleg busts Pepper back to soldier for this stunt.  And if she gets Astra killed, I am coming back as a fighter/ranger BUG.

(aka thri-kreen)

eta: actually I think with the right feats, I could make what I'm doing with Astra work with a warlock instead of a seeker... hmm
128
Wouldn't that make orders to surrender when your side had lost a battle always illegal?

"Help the badgers and shit pass on?" I ask, confused.

"You said they were stuck here in undeath," he says reasonably.  "That sounds cruel, even for a dumb animal.  I would not torture my horse so, for example."
"Um," I say.  "Well, they'll fade away sooner or later.  There's shit you can do for ones that've gone mad, yeah, but it aint exactly safe neither, even if you know what you're doing.  My late brother did, but I didn't really learn enough to do it on my own, yeah?  Besides, that's just... it's still controlling 'em, only difference is what you're making 'em do."

I inch away from the vampire a little, looking over in horror.
132
"That... aint really how it works," I say carefully.  "Least, not all the time."  I gesture at Mari as I unconsciously adopt a more teaching tone.  "Ghosts, right, they can't pass on.  You aint calling 'em up from Dolurrh, you're calling up things that are already stuck here, for whatever reason.  But I don't have nothing to do with the ghosts that was people.  Not by choice, anyway."
133
Evocation?
134
"How many times I gotta tell you I aint a necromancer?" I say, a little exasperated.  "The Enclave said I had talent, yeah, but wasn't ever gonna be strong enough.  Besides, it's only a problem if you're dumb about it."

"No, Astra," he says seriously.  "Necromancy is wrong.  That Karrnathi youth are being raised to believe in expediency that is precisely why our mission is so important.  There is still time for you repent of the path you're on."
"What's wrong about something that don't hurt no one?" I ask sceptically.
135
The Enclave of the Twelve is apparently where everyone in Karrnath goes to get tested for necromantic ability.

"Look," I say, swallowing a little, cause if this Tarravan doesn't want to try beating it out of us and if we already killed one of his buddies and he doesn't have any use left for us the outcome is pretty clear, and lean forward, gazing at him steadily.  "I'm Astra, once of Atur, and later of the edge of the Nightwood just to the south.  You ever been in that area, you probably heard of me, cause this is what I do.  I take jobs to kill bandits and kill monsters from the forest for free and find missing kids.  And maybe it aint my place to say everything I know about everything when I'm working, or run my mouth about who's paying me, but I'm only here cause someone's missing and needs help, and cause I need money to look after my sick sister and her kid.  And that's the truth, my hand to the gods.  I aint your enemy."

[I mean, I think she probably is technically their enemy, but she doesn't know that lol]
138
[lol yay

Bluff: 8+2=10]
139
"Uh, yeah, cause the kid's da works there," I say, then frown at him.  "Did you take him?  You can't just go around kidnapping people, you know, we got laws against that here."
140
[I'm sure Olegov's +3 Bluff will dramatically improve our chances over Astra's +2.]
141
I glance over at Olegov.
142
"Nobody said nothing to me about no twisted abominations," I reply.  "I'm just here cause some guy wants his missing kid back.  Why're you after us, anyway?  I mean, what makes you think we can even help you?"

[Just to clarify my thoughts here, I'm not rolling Bluff because to Astra's view that is the only reason she, in particular, was included on this mission; the group as a whole has another purpose as well, but she's just talking about herself.  Let me know if that's skirting it too much and I'll toss in a check!]
143
"What monstrous abuses?" I break in to ask, curious what this staff whatever thing we've been sent after actually does.  Necromancy aint that useful a description, after all, seeing as how apparently some people think what I do counts as necromancy.
144
And what reason's that? I think, but look to the captain rather than asking myself; better wait and see how he wants to do this before speaking out too much.
145
[As long as they're leaving her and Olegov alone, Astra will stay out of it.]
146
"You got a name?" I ask the commander, then jerk my head at Andri's body.  "And sorry about him, for real.  I shoulda knocked him out at the end, there, before... don't matter now, I guess."
147

"This is a horrible country," mutters Atrelioth.
"Feel free to leave anytime," I drawl, slouching in my seat.

I am reading a really useful guide to Stealth right now that I thought I'd share!

http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?447238-The-Rules-of-Hidden-Club-I-Think-I-Failed-A-Spot-Check

It taught me a new thing I had not known before:
Quote
How do you become Hidden?

...

3) You cannot have HAD Hidden at the start of the action and lost it during the action. Which is to say, you can't BECOME Hidden as part of the same action that loses your Hidden state.

So if you're Hidden and move through a square that has no cover or concealment as part of your move action, you can't Stealth check at the end of that action.  Unless you're invisible intrinsically rather than environmentally, of course, because then you never became unhidden in the first place.

Also, we really need to remember in future that while Val has his lingering invisibility from Swarm of Shadows the turn after, he should be Stealth checking after he moves; don't think it'd have mattered in his last turn since he attacked directly afterwards and he was getting his combat advantage off the total concealment of invisibility, anyway, but if he moves last, could buy him another round of relative safety.

Ghosts don't count, I think.  Obviously.
150
If only.

I turn my head away, done engaging the vampire.  Nothing good ever comes of that, either.
