Artists' Projects / April Camp Nanowrimo
Anyone else plan to do this?

My plans right now are to continue working on my Gideon Saga revisions, and to do at least one substantive blog post per week.  By substantive I mean 2000+ polished words with appropriate images and citations, on 4-5 different topics that I want to become recurring themes on my blog.  And I want to get into the habit of promoting my blog entries via social media.

When the July Nanowrimo comes around, I want to tackle something new in the way of fiction.  I have a couple ideas for stories not set anywhere near the Gideon milieu, but have been reluctant to start something new and further distract myself from finishing it.

It would be cool to put together a cabin!

Somewhat relevant to the above.

Artists' Projects / Re: The thread of bitching
In working on my draft of the first part of my novel, written a few years ago, I've found this huge piece of plot that I left lying around while I ran off and did other stuff with my characters.

I'm going to have to figure out how to rescue a couple dozen characters who most incautiously went off on a little adventure several hundred miles from the main setting.

Or, I could just undo that part of the story.

I know which plot direction would be easier.  I know which plot direction would be more interesting.  They are not the same plot direction.

put in your tired, hackneyed word or phrase and get back a list of bright, shiny alternatives.

I looked up "hackneyed" and the list of alternatives contains "shop-worn".  I think I'll use that one!

Ursula K. Le Guin's Call to Action for Authors

While accepting the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, celebrated science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin urges authors to remember why they do what they do. Her argument that writing is an art form rather than a commodity is inspiring and one any avid reader must watch!

"Isn't it funny how characters develop.
One of my characters was created simply because he owned a tractor and some chickens.
Now he's declaring war and killing people!"

Technical Stuff / Server migration
I just received a email that this site will be transferring to a new server sometime tonight.

We will probably have at least a short outage during the night.

General Discussion / Freelancing
Is anyone doing this?  Is anyone interested in freelancing?

I've just begun doing a little research on blogs and websites that pay (meh not a lot mostly) for articles/guest bloggers.  Given the pay (generally $25 to $100 for an article of <=1000 words), most opportunities look more like a way to build a resume than to add more than a little pocket change to one's income.

I can throw some links out occasionally as I run across something interesting.

One that caught my eye today was http://www.theintrospectionist.com/

A couple of their upcoming themes are of enough interest that I could probably write an article without too much annoyance.  I'm not sure if my perspective is unique enough to interest them, but there's one way to find out.

And this.  On several different levels.  An ancient, dead and drowned forest giving rise to legends of a lost kingdom.  But, also what lost 21st century coastal cities occasionally revealed by storms may spark in the way of legends and mythology in a few thousand years.

On a brighter note, the Dukha people

There have been some amazing photo articles about them in my facebook feed lately, particularly some about the golden eagle falconers.

Not something I have to worry about any time soon, but especially if our characters speak with a non-mainstream voice about non-mainstream experiences, however moving their stories and articulate their voices, this could happen.

The Writer's Mary Sue Test for your characters

I'm surprised my main female character scores as well on this test as she does, given the genre, mutants/possible new subspecies aspect of it, and the cultural clashes that are a main aspect of the setting.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The score for my main male character is comparable.  295 possible points.  They scored 17 and 20 respectively.

This thread is for strange things that catch your fancy and give you artistic ideas.

This, for starters:

The Silent Twins

I could put "open to membership requests" in the member group title, and also put it in the thread where I'll keep the list of private forums.
72
I believe there's the potential for DT to feel that way, since the way we're setting things up will put some of the most substantive discussion in private, invitation-only forums.

I'm not sure if that's a problem that should be prevented or fixed.  I'm not sure if it's a problem at all.  I'm not sure if that's how the site will evolve to feel.

Anyway, Something to think about.
73
I can probably do that once I find out why custom menu buttons don't show up for people who are in a custom member group.  Until I know that's fixable, I don't know how I want to proceed on a couple of other features I'd like to have.

I've reported this to the developer.

If the above problem isn't solvable I'll probably have to scrap the current "ask"/"accept" process (which I like!) and go with a process where the asking is manual - PM or post or something, and the owner of that subforum adds the person manually.

I don't think it's necessarily more work to do it that way, but the board owner won't get notification of a request automatically the way it happens now.

Technical Stuff / Whooo! Google has found us!
I noticed the google spider having a look around yesterday.  Today, google returns actual links to search terms!

These forums don't show up in the main index for guests and non-subscribed members because they are private.  The member who requested the forum is the moderator (by default), and members whose join requests can read and post in the forums.  I'll update this post with new private artist forums to make them easier to learn about.
