When the wagon is out of earshot, I ask Karlach, "Sir, have you been briefed on our mission?"
27
"Captain," Karlach says sharply, drawing Olegov's attention.  "The elf, if you please."
"Pardon, sir. That elf? Yes, the elf is with us. Sergeant First Class, Antigone Palatinate. Karnnathian Special Forces. Keep an eye on her--she's a bit of a lone wolf."
28
It does get chilly in these parts. I'd imagine a roaring bonfire would be welcomed.
29
Karlach narrows his eyes, looking to Olegov.  "The ghost is here on the general's orders, Captain?" he confirms.
"That is correct," I say, before lowering my voice, "though I suspect it was only to rid himself of its presence. Still, orders are orders. And the spirit has proven itself useful."
30
I review the document. "Yes, everything seems in order and accounted for. I hereby relinquish command of this unit to you, Lieutenant Colonel."

What a relief! I'm a chaplain, dammit. I'm not cut out for this command stuff.
31
"Captain Oleg Olegov, sir," I salute, since we're apparently no longer making it a secret that we're in the army. "Out of Fort Deepdark. During the course of our mission, our commanding officer was called away, and we were told to rendezvous with their replacement here. Upon arriving at the roadhouse, we were attacked by well-armed hostiles and forced to surrender. Their interrogation was brief, and it was regarding our mission. They let us go, in shackles, but one of their own set the inn on fire after they left."

Evil, yes. Yes he is. Though not... too evil. I ponder to myself, sizing up the newcomer.

But what are his--economic leanings? Doesn't appear to be a communal sort of person. Or the gifting economy type so that is in his favor. He could be an anti-Dragonmarked distributist, too--may as well be anarchists--bah! Or is he a Dragonmarked centrist? Likely. Yes. I would think so. Still, hard to tell based on dress and demeanor alone.

"Hail, sir. Kol Korran's blessing be upon you," I say, cheerfully.
34
"I know not where our contact has gone," I continue to whisper. "Unharmed by these brigands, I hope. Likely they put some distance between themselves and this place when they saw the location was compromised. We may meet them on the trail."
35
"Is everybody accounted for?" I ask, holding out my hands for Pepper to remove the manacles. "Is anybody in need of medical assistance?"

While Pepper works to remove the manacles, I whisper to her, "When your superior officer calls for surrender, do it!  You risked too much! Bravery and initiative is commendable, but lone wolf antics could get us all killed!"

[Gah, wrong name!]

"Stay low!" I shout to everyone. "Or the smoke will kill you before the fire!"

"But what leads you to believe General ir'Dulinch would betray his king? Surely you cannot believe we could take you on your word alone regarding such a serious charge? What evidence have you?"

After reading The Burning Wheel, I felt that it was a player's dream and a GM's nightmare. In a heavily narrative-driven system, ironically two of the flaws The Burning Wheel suffers from are system complexity and a lack of setting material.

If you can get your hands on the Mouse Guard RPG--and your players are ok with roleplaying its tiny protagonists--I'd start there.  Mouse Guard is to TBW as D&D Red Box is to D&D PHB/DMG/MM/etc. And besides being TBW-lite, Mouse Guard has setting material and antagonists and a solid theme.

FYI I'm out for the next four hours... Warcraft movie.

Let us know what it's like.

Overall, as a World of Warcraft player (and a Warcraft player long ago), I was happy to see many of the game's characters, its magic, its plots, and its setting brought to "life", and I think anybody who likes fantasy movies would enjoy it. Was it better than Lord of the Rings? No. Was is better than all of the D&D movies so far? Yeah, probably.
41
I've read it, but I've never played it. Why do you ask?
42
"I'm clearly not from a Spire, genius," I snort, "otherwise I wouldn't have been swanning around with the bloody army for the last hundred years, would I?

"But this is something I am suddenly very interested in. I need to get back to the Fort. When are you planning on releasing us?"

Tarravan looks over at Oleg.  "Are you still sticking to your cover story, then?" he asks, with a gesture toward Val.  Then he replies, "Certainly, release is not on the table until I have the information I need. "  He looks at the group as a whole.  "Tell me everything you know about this artifact, and which faction you're attempting to bring it to."

I look down at Val on the table. Badly injured, but she will recover. In need of a reprimand, though, when she comes to.

Well, there goes our cover. I'd rather we not end up like her, or worse.

"The story is true, at least in part. I am Chaplain Olegov; I am an unordained priest of Kol Korran. And captain, in the Karrnathi army. Many soldiers have gone missing in search of this artifact, and in addition to retrieving it for military purposes, we were to attempt to rescue any soldiers who had gone missing in search of it."

"The artifact is necromantic in nature, beyond that, I know no specifics. Typical 'need to know'. Why do you ask about a faction? We're Karrnathi army, if that's what you mean."

"The Sovereign Host. I'm a member of the clergy. Unordained, mind you. But as I said before, my patron is Kol Korran, the god of gold, the deity of commerce, the maker of money. May his praise bring a rain of riches upon us all! Yes! Yes... "

I scratch my beard thoughtfully with manacled hands.

"Where was I? Oh, the missing kid. Got to adventuring in these parts we were told, and his father wishes to see him return. We were heading this way, and he offered a fair reward."
46
The commander says dryly, "We're here for much the same reason you are, I believe."
"Yes, but why would you be interested? I mean, you're not from around here and clearly we have... differing beliefs."
47
"This is a horrible country," mutters Atrelioth.
"Why are you here? Are you lost?"
48
[Do they sound like they're from this country?]

"Tis a strange place," I say, leaning against a post for comfort, "and I've seen stranger than vampires here. A roving revenant warforged, for example. I didn't know those things could have souls, let alone one strong enough to bring em back. Purposeful thing, though. You could see that in its unblinking, phosphorescent eyes."

"And I saw a gallows tree once. Hung seventeen gnome spies from it, they did, and left them there to rot. Something in that oak tree went... bad. Uprooted itself and went on a walkabout, seventeen shrieking gnome corpses swinging in the wind."

"Strange place this is, yes," I say, pondering. "Vampires can be downright pleasant."

Astra's voice snaps me out of my fit of flailing and speaking in tongues to survey the situation.

"Alas, the market is bearish," I murmur, dropping my weapon next to me. "Kol Korran gives and Kol Korran takes. We surrender."
