Would a warpriest be considered a military chaplain? And chaplains don't have a rank, correct?

The chaplain bit sounds right to me, especially for a Sovereign Host one, since they're supposed to be less partisan, so it'd be weird for them to join as soldiers, yeah?  I think in the US chaplains have ranks based on seniority, but this is Nerd Transylvania, so however you want to worldbuild it is fine with me, lol.

Chaplains typically start rank as Captain with a possible promotion to Major and Colonel.   I think.

If they're an actual priest of the Sovereign Host (i.e., ordained by the Host church) I wouldn't expect them to be serving at all, given the government non-interference thing.  But clerics certainly don't have to be priests or accepted by the official church hierarchy in any way.  If Karrnath's army has military chaplains, I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to get a cleric in that position for the Host followers.  And probably lord it over the church, as well :D

Makes sense. I was thinking my character's calling came through a religious experience while serving in the Karrnath military.

While the Sovereign Host are distant gods when compared to pantheons outside of Eberron, it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to have a conversion experience of some kind, would it?

I was wondering how the Catholic Church handles this IRL, since there are totally Catholic priest chaplains, but Catholic priests aren't free to join the military, so I googled.  Turns out the Church has an "Archdiocese for the Military Services" and priests assigned to chaplaincies are part of that and sort of on-loan to whatever military branch of whatever country.  Or something like that, IDK, I got distracted by noodles.  Mmm, noodles.

Captain, eh? Hmmm... I guess I could see this character getting promoted (too) quickly because he's a military chaplain who is an honest-to-gods cleric.

Hmm.  I think it'd depend on the experience?  Some outward miracle wouldn't be the sort of things the gods of the Host do (unless it's a miracle performed by a cleric, of course), but a more inward experience/presumed revelation, sure.

For my own cleric, Lula was brought up as a Host follower and started working to become a priest after watching her priest/cleric mentor healing people and otherwise being a great guy, because she wanted both structure and some sort of real accomplishment in her life.  Her cleric powers, healing in particular, manifested about six months or so later, when she was working to keep dying people alive with mundane approaches and was about to fail and lose someone.  It was a moment when she first had a genuine, deep faith, albeit one rather mixed with desperation, but she'd probably describe it simply as the gods choosing her to serve them.

So yeah, someone having a conversion experience that involved their powers manifesting would probably be fine, I'd think!

That (overly fast and undeserved authority/respect because she's a cleric) is pretty much exactly what happened to Lula as a priest lol

That was Palitinate's impression.  I figured she probably was in the service or ranked somehow.

I'm just using what I know from my experience in the Civil Air Patrol.

Here we all are in order of rank, with our pay (not including things like food and uniform allowances); there are 28 days to the month and 12 months to the year.  Ten silver to the galifar/gold piece:

Major Gisaul Leatherleaf (2 gold/day)
Captain Oleg Olegov (1.5 gold/day)
Sergeant (First Class) Antigone Palatinate (5 silver/day)
Corporal Valenae (2 silver/day)
Soldier Astra (1 silver/day)

Combat pay is an additional 4.5 silver a month, regardless of rank, assuming teshi's happy with my using current US military pay regulations to work that one out.  And she had better be, because I have had enough of converting shillings and deciding on a value for the dollar when it crashed to half its previous worth over the course of five years because civil war, damnit.

Armour, weapons, jewelry etc.? Yes, thankfully, or I'd still be mulling over what to do. No, I meant gear for the journey, packs, clothing, etc., or is it assumed we're all smart enough to pack long johns on an Arctic hike?

Aha!

Quote
You'll be issued a travel kit with that kind of stuff (rations, bedroll, flint and tinder, etc.)  But do choose the level 6 items (5/6/7 magic items and the gp or it's worth in stuff) you want for your particular character's build.  The gp and magic items are a lot for a normal soldier, so if it'd be OOC for your character to be so fancy,  you can be issued it from the stores for this mission during the game's prologue.

Since we are soldiers, do we have to worry about gear like bedrolls, etc ourselves or are you going to requisition a standard load-out for each of us?

Select one, appropriate to your character:  cloth armor, leather armor, hide armor, chainmail, scale armor, or plate armor
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Select a weapons loadout from among the following:  dagger, handaxe, spear, short sword, longsword, crossbow (and bolts), hand crossbow (and bolts), light shield, heavy shield
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Everyone gets:  bedroll, torch, fannypack, flint and steel, waterskin, backpack, candles, trail rations, identification papers
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As a party you also are issued two tents and two lengths of rope.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Any additional items your characters want to bring should come out of their own funds and/or magic item allotment.

Did I overlook anything?

You can add winter clothes to the list, and I, thy benevolent god, will also give you five mounts...of some sort.

What's the range on the torch's bright light and dim light?

Category: Gear

Description: A torch is a wooden rod capped with twisted flax soaked in tallow. A torch burns for one hour and provides bright light to a radius of 5 squares.

You see on the first page of the character sheet pdf I sent, the abilities section?  And the column of boxes labelled 'check'?  That's what you want to add to your roll when doing an ability check, not the entire ability value; each check value is equal to half your level plus your ability modifier (which is -1 for an ability score of 8 or 9, 0 for 10 or 11, 1 for 12 or 13, etc).

eta: also, 5+3=8, not 7 :P

Besides jussr's correction there, it was great.  I usually give a fairly cursory description of new places/people/etc. and then reveal much more in response to checks.

[Oh, and can you come up with a default marching order/arrangement?  Obviously you don't have to stay in it, but just so I have a general idea when not otherwise specified.]

I put Astra at the back because rank, but she'll go where she's put, with the possible exception of being put next to the ghost.  Probably makes more sense to spread out our two defenders, anyway.  I think she's best suited to being at the front, but she'll need to be ordered to that position.

Antigone's immediate superior is Captain Olegov, a sir
Oleg's immediate superior is Major Leatherleaf, a ma'am

Lieutenant Zecklin is a ma'am, General ir'Dulinch is a sir or potentially a m'lord

So back up = shift one square - is that far enough to make a ranged attack?

And maybe I need another weapon?

Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread
Reply #164
Yep, it's far enough.  You can take a non-magical melee weapon as well, yes, certainly doesn't hurt, but your only relevant power is the melee basic attack, and it (usually) takes two minor actions to sheathe one weapon and draw another.  Unless we're in very close quarters and you simply can't get even that small amount of distance to make your ranged attacks, you'll be better off with your bow.

eta: you can have astra's mundane longsword when she gets her magic khopesh if you want!

Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread

This is what I'm thinking.  Pepper is Special Forces and a sniper (spoilers!).  She would be trained to notice small details that could make big difference.  So she could be reading him for tells.  Or is that too much like Insight?

Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread
Reply #195
That does sound like Insight, yeah.  Which I suppose implies there's something else in our surroundings to perceive?

Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread
Reply #196
Yeah, I think there's too much overlap with Insight there. There's a case to be made that Perception could be used to detect, say, subtle shifts in body language, while Insight would be used to interpret them. But then you'd think every Insight check would need to be accompanied by a Perception check, which is needlessly complicated.

I don't find inventory management to be a riveting component of RPGs, so a couple of things:

I categorically decline to keep count of mundane crossbow bolts or arrows.

North America's toughest tree. In Les Isles de Magdalene there are 100 year old black spruce less than 2m tall and a few cm in diameter. They stand in the way of some of the fiercest gales the Gulf of St. Laurence can conjure up.

Also chaos: two of my chicken raising friends have had one pet chicken.

One managed to hide during slaughter time and subsequently became a pet and lived ten years as a partial house chicken. She was quite affectionate and would cuddle up in my friend's arms and make soft clucky sounds while sticking her head in friend's armpit.

The other was a weird looking tall skinny chicken that looked a bit like one of those upright running ducks. The second friend who owned her was going to cull her because she didn't lay many eggs, but the chicken would follow her everywhere and stand around clucking until she got some attention, and sit on the porch away from the other chickens waiting for my friend to come out, then act delighted and all flappy and dancing around. Lived to be nine or ten.

These absent details always drive me nuts in novels. Hero travels eleventy-hundred miles, never eats or feeds his mount or stops for gas if driving. Kidnap victim locked in room for days, never ever pees. Post-apoc. novels are the worst, especially the 'years of domestic conflict' kind, where they drive around the landscape shooting things continually and never seem to need fuel. Or it's ten years after and they are still finding gasoline, which hey, degrades pretty fast within a couple years unless treated with not easily obtained chemical additives. Or poof they are using grain alcohol fuel - do you have any idea how much grain is needed to make a gallon of alcohol fuel? A lot. I looked it up for my mindromp novels. It's easy to make, but first you have to have vast fields dedicated to fuel production when you're struggling to produce enough food to last your family over the winter.

what is the question?

me: say, half a dozen reindeer hides, treated but with the hair or fur or whatever left on
i need an approximate weight and volume, folded or rolled
volume's more important; could one person carry this in a pack without it being ridiculous?
i *think* the weight is fine, from my research
reindeer/caribou
also, the reason lillian chapters don't flow easily is all the THREE HOUR RESEARCH BREAKS

Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread
Reply #284
Hahaha! I know all about it. Especially for the first DASN novel I spent probably months of time researching the most mundane things because I couldn't stand just making shit up, which is ridiculous considering everything else required great thumping loads of suspension of disbelief on the part of any readers.

I had long PM discussions with various people about gasoline, weapons, various kinds of vehicles, and researched farm production rates, seed viability over years, orchard maturing time, horse gestation periods, breeds of sheep and cattle, horse travel time on trails and roads, sailing ship speeds and so on.

Second one was a bit easier because I had established so much already.

Re raven's character:

Quote
SONG OF REST
When you play an instrument or sing during a short rest, you and each ally who can hear you are affected by your Song of Rest. When an affected character spends healing surges at the end of the rest, that character regains additional hit points equal to your Charisma modifier with each healing surge. A character can be affected by only one Song of Rest at a time.

An American from Philadelphia, on hearing I, a Nova Scotian, was going to be in Amsterdam, asked me to say hello to two men if I encountered them. One American, one Dutch, both gay artists, and some basic physical description. And their first names.

Several months after I settled in Haarlem, I went to Amsterdam for Friday evening and stopped for a drink in my favourite bar on Leidseplein. I suddenly remembered my promise, and relayed the scanty info to the bartender who was pouring my drink. "Oh yes" he said. "They are in here every Thursday night." (Later I met them and passed on the message.)

Even the real world is small in some ways.

Still, in general it shouldn't be as hard for Astra as it is in our world, what with both the military and quasi-medieval culture; she looks younger than her actual age, but at the same time, people will be assumed to mature faster mentally, get married in her stratum of society at even younger ages than she's pretending to be, etc.  If anything, it's her competence in a fight I think would be quite widely questioned, since she's 5'4 and 120lbs lol (and wearing 45lb armour, eesh).  Which is informing how I'm playing her and her reactions in the current situation!

Storm King's Thunder hardcover adventure for 5e. Looks like an adventure with giants that isn't a rehash of Against the Giants. And a new 5e monster book I think. No word on new setting material yet (like Eberron for 5th edition :( ).

I wasn't sure what happened if someone was doubly grabbed, so I looked it up:
Quote
Escape
A creature can attempt to escape when it is grabbed. Other immobilizing effects might also let a creature try to escape.
Escape a Grab or Immobilizing Effect
Action: Move action.
Acrobatics or Athletics Check: The creature makes either an Acrobatics or an Athletics check. Normally, the immobilizing effect specifies the DC for the check. If no DC is specified, an Acrobatics check is opposed by the Reflex of the immobilizing creature or effect, and an Athletics check is opposed by its Fortitude.
Against Multiple Grabbers: If the creature is trying to escape and is grabbed by more than one source at once, the creature makes a single check against the highest of the grab DCs. The DC increases by 2 for each grabber beyond the first, to a maximum increase of 8.
Success: If the check succeeds, the immobilizing effect ends on the creature, which can then shift 1 square.

Item List, in decreasing order of preference:

1. Vanguard Handaxe +1 ( lvl 3 ) and Ruby Scabbard ( 5 ) - putting these together due to the levels and the fact that if I'm switching over to two weapons instead of a weapon and shield, I really need that scabbard
2. Boots of the Mighty Charge ( 10 )
3. Gloves of the Bounty Hunter ( 8 )
4. Cincture of the Dragon Spirit ( 6 )
5. Frost Charger Bracers ( 13 )

One of the downsides of my ghostly status is that I only have 2 healing surges, so surgeless healing would be preferable. One of the upsides is that, despite my low max HP, my surge value is a fairly ludicrous 17, so right now I don't need any bonuses on top of a surge. So things like Healing Word are best spent on others in this instance.

In D&D5E, I usually play a spell caster of some kind, so I don't have to roll to hit to be effective--I just have no luck with dice. Plus I usually DM, so for dramatic effect, I can fudge dice rolls as needed behind the screen.

One of my players has the worst luck with dice I have ever seen. The first character he played in our group was a paladin. I swear, he never hit once. He still had lots of fun, because he enjoyed roleplaying his character. During his horrible rolling streaks, other players would lend them their dice, which for them rolled average, but in his hands, they would only roll 1, 2, or 3s.

On the other hand, my son--who has played with my tabletop group since he was a teenager--has the most luck with dice I have ever seen. He rolls more natural 20s in one evening than I roll in an entire year. No trick dice or rolling techniques, just luck. I watched him roll three natural 20s in a row in one fight.

When I'm DMing, on the nights he goes out, when he returns home, the players beg him to jump into the game and save them. And he usually does.

Invariably he plays a character that can benefit greatly from critical hits, usually a rogue or a barbarian.

The last adventure we played through was a high level adventure, 5th edition, levels 15-20, and somebody else was DMing. Player characters were allowed one legendary item. So he took in a bear totem barbarian with a vorpal weapon. And 5th edition vorpal weapons are like earlier editions... you roll a natural 20, and the enemy's head is cut off. He was a unstoppable whirlwind of destruction.

I am reading a really useful guide to Stealth right now that I thought I'd share!

http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?447238-The-Rules-of-Hidden-Club-I-Think-I-Failed-A-Spot-Check

It taught me a new thing I had not known before:
Quote
How do you become Hidden?

...

3) You cannot have HAD Hidden at the start of the action and lost it during the action. Which is to say, you can't BECOME Hidden as part of the same action that loses your Hidden state.

So if you're Hidden and move through a square that has no cover or concealment as part of your move action, you can't Stealth check at the end of that action.  Unless you're invisible intrinsically rather than environmentally, of course, because then you never became unhidden in the first place.

Also, we really need to remember in future that while Val has his lingering invisibility from Swarm of Shadows the turn after, he should be Stealth checking after he moves; don't think it'd have mattered in his last turn since he attacked directly afterwards and he was getting his combat advantage off the total concealment of invisibility, anyway, but if he moves last, could buy him another round of relative safety.

Scott Garabi, who for all you know is just some guy from New Jersey, advanced what I thought was an elegant solution to deal with party splits.

First, the player(s) who splits spells out exactly what he wants to do away from the main group.

Second, the DM then provides fail/success ranges and outcomes for a roll on a D20.

In our case this is what I want to succeed at:

1.  Pepper exits through the window undetected.
2.  Pepper makes her way to the horses and disburses them to further inconvenience her enemies by eliminating their ability to escape or pursue.
3.  Pepper makes her way to the other side of the bridge undetected and sets up in a sniping position over watching the door.
4.  Pepper creates a distraction that makes at least one enemy exit the building.
5.  Pepper successfully head shots the enemy.

Then Teshi determines fail/success ranges and the outcomes.

For example: a roll of 1-4 might be: Pepper gets caught and subdued immediately.  Total failure; 5-8: Pepper gets out the window but the enemies are alerted, they confront her at the horses; 9-12: she gets out undetected, gets to the horses, but they don't budge;  ... 17-19: success but the enemy is only wounded; 20: total success.

Whatever Teshi deems fair and useful.

Then I roll a D20 (or get someone else to roll to make sure its fair) and whatever the results is what happens.

That way I can get my character to do what she would do, but it doesn't take a lot of time or distraction from the rest of you.

What do you say?

I'm not automatically opposed to the idea, except that Pepper cannot roll high enough to one-hit kill any of the enemies, so if by "head-shots" you mean finishes them off all at once...the odds of that are zero, aren't they?

I see how it's faster at resolving the string of actions you posted already, but it seems like most of the outcomes other than "caught and subued off the bat" just open another degree of separation?  So let's say Pepper successfully gets out, spooks the killer horses, and snipes an enemy, wounding them (or even killing him/her, if that was an option on the table).  The situation hasn't actually changed much, right?  Pepper is still out on her own away from the rest of the party, and the rest of the party is still under guard and disarmed.

I'm not trying to be difficult or made of NO, I'm just unclear on why I'm throwing out the exiting ruleset if the purpose of the alterantive ruleset is to efficiently reuinte separated parties, but the player's desired outcomes don't result in a reuinted party?  I might just be missing something.

So theoretically I could just have the warhorses run Pepper down like regular monsters would, but it didn't seem in keeping with the spirit of the source text about mounts.  Warhorses are trained to attack independently if they get a chance, yeah, but they're just reacting to their environment, not strategizing or working toward their masters' goals, and horses aren't naturally predatory.

I believe Pepper is at 9 HP?  Neither she nor the other combatants got a chance to heal from the last encounter or to recharge their encounter powers.

After reading The Burning Wheel, I felt that it was a player's dream and a GM's nightmare. In a heavily narrative-driven system, ironically two of the flaws The Burning Wheel suffers from are system complexity and a lack of setting material.

If you can get your hands on the Mouse Guard RPG--and your players are ok with roleplaying its tiny protagonists--I'd start there.  Mouse Guard is to TBW as D&D Red Box is to D&D PHB/DMG/MM/etc. And besides being TBW-lite, Mouse Guard has setting material and antagonists and a solid theme.

I have had Mouse Guard since it was first released.

And I concur with your analysis on Burning Wheel.  I keep running into people who have read the books and love them, but no one who has actually played a game with the system.

With all the Fallout 4 I've been playing lately, you're lucky it's not an audiotape for your pipboy.

Okay, obviously Mari and Val can escape okay, so long as we can get a window or the door open for Val to fly out through.  Getting out of manacles is ... Acrobatics, but that takes 5 minutes of uninterrupted effort apparently, or you can do it as a standard action at the cost of increasing the (hard) DC by 5.  Pepper could manage it if she got lucky, but that's it.  Astra's got decent STR, but breaking actual manacles is probably pretty difficult.  She can likely get the door open, at least?  And if she gets free, she should be able to drag someone out.

eta: I've also got Endurance trained; maybe I can use that to buy extra time, however that'd work in this situation?

To get manacles off a character, I'd also accept a thievery check from another player, to pick the locks.  Or, you know, something else creative but logical.

They didn't take our non-weapon inventories, right?  Did anyone bring lockpicks, by any chance?  I think most of Astra's stuff is out with her clawfoot.

Zoder was pretty irked.  Pepper'd look something like this:

Is the window that Pepper escaped through still open?

Doors and windows are closed.

So is my DC for escaping even higher?

Also, good that the place is closed up.  It will keep the fire from breathing.

Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread

Astra's setting up Karlach's tent (and the other two) outside!  Probably off to the east or west a bit, at a good distance from the burning building so they don't catch from any stray sparks.  And he's up by the fence walling off the lightning rail line.

eta:  Okay.  I think based on statements/implications, Astra is doing the tent thing, Karlach is with Olegov and Mari over closer to the building, the innkeeper is with the drovers who may or may not have left yet (hoping not, because Astra has some questions for the innkeeper about the other group Tarravan's people killed), and Pepper is with the animals and Val in the barn, the latter of whom is doing his eladrin trance thing.  That sound about right to everyone?  Karlach could call Pepper out to join them once he knows who she is.

So, to answer your question, Pepper is talking to Val, who is in a trance, so she is talking to the air right now.

Translation:  the rules don't specify, and the DM decided that being too specific about how far a PC can separate from another PC would be an unnecessary pain in the ass, lol

Hi!

So, I think we clearly need to just go on hiatus here.  I'm both back to regular full-time work and teaching a college course, so my days are stuffed and I don't have time at the moment to make a dedicated attempt at rebuilding forward momentum.  Can I suggest we table this for now, and revisit it in the spring if there's any interest in resuming then?

Chaos, if you wanted to start your game (here or elsewhere) I'd definitely be up for playing, though :)

I am interested in contiuing Pepper's descent into PTSD madness. I mean, ues let's pick up the adventure when we can.
