Choose Equipment and Magic Items.
Mundane
equipment is much less important for higher level
characters than it is when you're starting out.
Choose whatever standard adventuring gear you
want from the tables in the Player's Handbook. For
magic items, choose one item of your level + 1, one
item of your level, and one item of your level - 1. In
addition, you have gold pieces equal to the value of
one magic item of your level - 1. You can spend this
money on rituals, potions, or other magic items, or
save it for later.

So as a level six character, you can pick a level 5 magic item, level 6 magic item, and level 7 magic item, and you get 1000 gp to spend or not spend as you see fit.

As far as "standard adventuring equipment" goes, the compendium has a 1,250,000 gp item listed as "mundane equipment," so...lol.  There's been a lot of of stuff added since the original DMG.  Micromanaging carrying weight and how many copper pieces this or that would cost is unfun, so just be reasonable about what your character could and would afford and lug around.    Should you charge yourself for pencils and sandwiches, no, but lot of the compendium's mundane gear items are expensive and give bonuses similar to magic items, so if you want those, it makes sense to also take them out of your starting money.  Like, for example:

Quote
Tattlebugs (pair)
Category: Gear
Price: 250 gp
Description: When songs are sung in Senaliesse, the forests surrounding the city ring with beautiful echoes that emanate from the tattlebugs living in the trees. These scintillating beetles can mimic sound by rubbing their hind legs together.
The mimicry of adult tattlebugs is almost indistinguishable from the originator of the sound, so they're often used as spying devices. When placed in sight of another of its kind, a tattlebug repeats everything it has heard in the last five minutes.

Also, as you're making your character, feel free keep an eye out for items you might like to receive as loot in the future.  If you don't send me a wishlist I'm liable to just give you the most ridiculous items I can find.

lol x-post, what justine said

Hmm?

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
Since we are soldiers, do we have to worry about gear like bedrolls, etc ourselves or are you going to requisition a standard load-out for each of us?

Select one, appropriate to your character:  cloth armor, leather armor, hide armor, chainmail, scale armor, or plate armor
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Select a weapons loadout from among the following:  dagger, handaxe, spear, short sword, longsword, crossbow (and bolts), hand crossbow (and bolts), light shield, heavy shield
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Everyone gets:  bedroll, torch, fannypack, flint and steel, waterskin, backpack, candles, trail rations, identification papers
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As a party you also are issued two tents and two lengths of rope.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Any additional items your characters want to bring should come out of their own funds and/or magic item allotment.

Did I overlook anything?

Imagine Imperial Russia and Soviet Russia had a better-funded baby that enthusiastically embraced Prussian virtues.  Plus zombies.

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
How about skill checks to scavange parts and ingredients? Make each ritual, potion, or thing a challenge. That substitutes time, circumstance and luck for cash and allows us poor soldiers to do stuff without carrying around mountains of arcane flux.

[edited because I shouldn't phone post]

Yeah, that makes sense.  If anyone wants to play an artificer or someone into potions or rituals or whatever, lemme know and we'll figure out something reasonably fair and functional :)

how are we choosing stats?

Points buy, please!  Video game style, yo

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
So hey.  IMO the costs of artifice, potions and (to a lesser extent) rituals are prohibitively high.  I'm open to ideas on how to homebrew that without unbalancing things, if you mathemagicians have any suggestions.

Yep.  Sovereign Host are the majority religion in Karrnath, too.

You'll be issued a travel kit with that kind of stuff (rations, bedroll, flint and tinder, etc.)  But do choose the level 6 items (5/6/7 magic items and the gp or it's worth in stuff) you want for your particular character's build.  The gp and magic items are a lot for a normal soldier, so if it'd be OOC for your character to be so fancy,  you can be issued it from the stores for this mission during the game's prologue.

Ranks

Rank plays an important role in any military campaign. Those used in the armies of the Five Nations are based on the old army of Galifar and are given below in ascending order.

Title   Ranking
Soldier      0
Sergeant      1
Lieutenant   2
Captain      3
Major      4
Colonel      5
General      6
Warlord      7

In Karrnath, warlord is also a hereditary title bestowed on the highest-ranking nobles of the land. Those who rise to the top of the military chain receive an additional qualifier. Thus, Karrn General Thauram is also a warlord, but he serves under First Warlord Gruden ir'Erdei, who fills the role of warlord in terms of military rank.

I'm cool with adding intermediate ranks like 2nd Lieutenant or Staff Sergeant if it fits your character concept.  It also seems to me that there'd be non-combat positions like farriers and cooks...basically, feel free to be creative.

Your characters can have the feats Improved Defenses and Versatile Expertise for free, by the way.  We'll say it's by dint of your military training  :D

Mostly I just want to free up some feat slots for interesting builds.

Quote
Versatile Expertise
Heroic Tier
Benefit: Choose a weapon group and an implement type. You gain a +1 feat bonus to attack rolls both when using a weapon from the chosen group and when using an implement of the chosen type. The bonus increases to +2 at 11th level and +3 at 21st level.
Special: You can take this feat more than once. Each time you take this feat, choose a different weapon group and a different implement type.

QIIBFA (Questions I Imagine Being Frequently Asked):
  • Are you going to suck less at DMing this time?
I sure hope so!  I have a delineated plan, and jack else to do this summer, so...
  • Why 4e?  Don't you know 4e is passe?
Because I know 4e and its byzantine bureaucratic backcatalog of materials, for better or worse.
  • I have/haven't played before - should I join?
    Yes.

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
What:  A 4e D&D Campaign in Three Acts, Wherein You Play a Karrnathi Soldier Dispatched on a Very Important Quest
Where:  Right here!
When:  Starting about a month from now (give or take for everyone to be ready), ending by mid-August at the VERY latest
Who:  You!  4 to 7 of you, to be exact.  And me as the DM.
Why:  Why not?

Player character guidelines:
  • Level 6
  • Your character is part of Karrnath's military.  It is up to you whether you're an officer or enlisted, career military or conscript, etc.
  • Choose appropriate equipment for a level 6; if it's not in-character for your PC to have snazzy items at the start of the game, you can "be issued them from the armory" shortly after the game starts
  • If you wish to be an outre class or race, or play an evil alignment, talk to me about it first so we can figure out how that'll work, eh?
  • Consider this general concept: skilled enough to send on a risky mission, wouldn't be TERRIBLY missed by their higher-ups if lost on a risky mission
  • This campaign is set a few years after the Treaty of Thronehold.

Okay, but what the hell's a Karrnath?

General Discussion / Re: Fodder

Yeah, I think at the very least it'd be important to think about fostering discussions, as possible, outside the "owned" forums, to keep the place lively for all comers.

Speaking for myself, pretty much anyone (other than googlebots and creepers) is welcome to join my subforum.

I wonder if there might be some way to obviously indicate whether particular owned forums are open to new audiences or not?
