Choose Equipment and Magic Items.
Mundane equipment is much less important for higher level characters than it is when you're starting out. Choose whatever standard adventuring gear you want from the tables in the Player's Handbook. For magic items, choose one item of your level + 1, one item of your level, and one item of your level - 1. In addition, you have gold pieces equal to the value of one magic item of your level - 1. You can spend this money on rituals, potions, or other magic items, or save it for later.
PHB/other books since they didn't exist when this was written is how we've done it previously, I believe, but either way - other people who asked me how much gold we get this game, please note I fucked up and it's actually 1000, not 1800.  Sorry!

(Are we not doing the "have as many mundane items as you like, within reason" thing, then?)

As a party you also are issued two tents...

Did I overlook anything?
Yes.  I don't cuddle.

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
Part of the problem too, IMO, is that sometimes it barely makes sense in-character for my PCs to be buying items, much less using gold for rituals/potions/etc.; Lula grew up pretty damn poor, and the idea of spending the equivalent of the price for a luxury car on a pair of boots horrifies her.  My current character for this game is also poor, and her inclination would be to save up any coin she gets along the way for the future, not spend it on anything.  So having components and ingredients and such that we find along the way strikes me as a good solution in general in a lot of cases, even apart from using it as a cost-saving measure.

(Is anyone even going to have rituals and brew potion, incidentally?  I'm martial/primal, so nope on my part.)

I'm not a very good controller.

D&D / Re: New campaign signup!
Okay, who's thinking of making what re defender, controller, leader, striker?  We will need a reasonably balanced party!

I have a potential build that's half defender, half controller - a fighter/seeker hybrid.  Building her to have a good damage output, though; she won't be awesome as a defender (no way to heal herself, but she's pretty sturdy).  She'd work best in concert with another defender, I think.

PEOPLE OE KARRNATH
The people of Karrnath are a disciplined people accustomed to military law. After humans, who make up over half the population, dwarves constitute the second largest group in Karrnath, unsurprising given the nation's proximity to the Mror Holds. Halflings, often from the Talenta Plains, are the next most common, followed by half-elves and elves. In pursuit of Karrnath's efforts to improve its military might, it has begun to accept dragonborn warriors immigrating from Q'barra.

For a time, the Blood of Vol was the government supported state religion of Karrnath. Those days have ended under Kaius III, but the faith is still practiced commonly throughout the nation. Most of Khorvaire's citizens devote themselves to the Sovereign Host, and a sizable minority worships the Dark Six. Karrns favor dark clothing, crisp lines, and military dress; formal wear among civilians closely resembles official uniforms. Bright colors are considered appropriate only for children, and wearing such colors to a formal function is a minor faux pas.

"What woman could be fit for a king but a king's sister?" Nuanna said from the Shadow Throne. His green-grey eyes met hers, and they flashed in a sudden, identical light.

"Then, my brother," said Nianna, bowing low, "I shall leave the kingdom immediately and find one, who is related to a different king, to marry you."

"Thank you," Nuanna said.

lol this test

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

14 for my female main, 22 for the older male, 23 for the younger.  And yeah, the ones related to destiny got me on all of them, because magic is a standard part of the setting and the like.

If you had fun before, I bet you can get that back again, even if it's not now or for quite some time.  I mean, even if your writing is bad and sporadic and short, so long as you're enjoying it, so what?  If you have an idea, a scene that appears without context and leaves you with no desire to write more after it's down, that's still writing, you know?

(I mention this because, for my next bitching contribution, today I wrote another 500 words of the chapter I had planned to finish, then stopped and opened up another file to jot down a quick three paragraph sketch of a scene involving one of my other characters, before I forgot.  And now I have a still unfinished chapter, alongside a chapter's worth of what is basically genderswitched regency romance set in my fantasy world and with a completely different tone to the actual damn book.  And which would screw up the plot besides, because my heroine has much more important concerns than a boyfriend unsure of his place in her life aaaaargh.  No, brain, I do not care how much you yearn to write a trashy romance novel where the extent of the dramatic tension is "oh no, mama wishes me to marry lady mcawfulandrich :( "; it is fantasy time.  Start cooperating, or the boyfriend gets it via heroically doomed sacrifice.)

Yeah, I don't know what to do about this, really.  As a writer, it's valuable to me to both have those substantive discussions with a group as I'm writing, then later to get opinions from a larger group that are coming to the work completely fresh.  Helps me find out if what I was trying to do works for people that don't already know my intentions in advance.

I suppose the question is whether this forum's focus is function, enabling artists to use their private areas in the ways that best serve their purposes, or if it's more to build a creative community.  Not that both can't happen either way, but different goals are going to favour different approaches, you know?

Could always have a subforum intended for any discussions that creators don't mind opening up to a wider audience, but are likely to influence people who see their work later on down the line.  I actually dithered over whether to do something like that for my last private thread, the one you commented on, since most of it makes sense even without having read my stuff.  So if others want to aim more for community building overall, I don't mind adapting my forum use to some degree; anything I really don't want in public I can always put in a separate, private thread as an addendum.

Have a wheel of feelings!  Someone posted this on my facebook feed, and I immediately saved it for my "I've used the same word three times in the last page, whoops" moments.

I comfort myself with this when I'm melting down over how I'm going to have to cut my past 8 hours of work!  IT'S SCAFFOLDING, NOT A WASTE; YOU'RE FINE.

For example, at the macro level I see many novels where the real story doesn't start till Chapter 4: Chs 1-3 are all just trundling towards the starting grid. And then there's the cry that your research is showing; historical or geographical facts are deliciously seductive to the writer, and it's by making the detail believable that we get the reader to suspend their disbelief in the story. But we're storytelling, not writing a gazeteer or a history book, and anything that doesn't serve the story is weakening it.

... So don't beat yourself up. Ch1-3 are all backstory that you needed to work out: they're process writing, not a failure or mistake, and now they've achieved their purpose and can be cut.

... Instead of regarding such things as mistakes, maybe we should see them as a dressmaker's tacking stitches; the wooden scaffolding over which the arches of the bridge are formed; the paper collar round the soufflé dish that you take off once the gelatine has set. They're part of the fundamental nature and process of creating that thing.

That blog in general has been very useful and reassuring for me as I go along.

Heh.  I've been using Open Office, copy/paste to move stuff, and export to pdf for what I send people to look at, which is... not ideal, so I'll be seeing what others suggest too.

13 does sound young to me.  Not that I intend to post anything risque, but it seems to me that some issues could be sidestepped by the site being oriented to legal adults, or at least people who are old enough to see an R-rated film without their mom coming along.

What issues are you thinking of?
449
Ah, I see.  Well, what about something like this - if you're going to add someone who'll have access to the read-only areas, in addition to getting input they will also have a waiting period wherein you will have a clear announcement posted that this is happening in, say, a month's time?  Everyone's responsible for checking back periodically (and that's one of the things they agree to when they sign up), but if they've got a problem with it then they have the option to remove all their shit before it happens.

eta: potentially also that anyone you give that sort of access to will be required to give you (just you) their full name and address so that if they violate someone's copyright they're easy to find for legal action?

I think 13 is reasonable, on the basis of remembering what I was like around 14/15; you've said you won't allow harassment, raven, so as long as we don't have teens being targeted without consequence I don't have a problem.  Can't imagine they'll see anything here that they wouldn't elsewhere, after all.

Mods I don't care about so much, but since admins can see anything we do in private forums, I'd like a bit stronger promise than you requesting input if you're thinking of adding one of them.

Also, depending on how 'obscene', 'profane', and 'adult material' are being defined, they don't really seem like they fit in a user agreement for writers.  I am profane all the damn time even when I'm not writing.

I don't have a problem with members in good standing advertising their work here so long as it's not over the top.
