Karlach nods.  "At ease, Captain.  The rest of the details - excepting the presence of the ghost - may wait for some measure of privacy, in that case."  He reaches into his furs and withdraws a sealed letter, which he passes over.  "As said replacement, I believe I have a letter of introduction for you."

In the background, Astra reappears and waits quietly, observing.

[When you break the seal the letter is indeed as he says, though you'll have to wait for teshi for any actual details beyond that!]
77
Karlach stares at Val for a long moment before commenting, "That was perhaps the most useless report I have ever heard in my career.  However did you receive your promotion, Corporal?"  He shakes his head and holds up a hand to stop Val from speaking further, casting his eyes over the rest of those gathered.  "We will have to work on it later; you are dismissed for now.  Would anyone else care to attempt making a report on this... situation before us?"
78
Karlach gestures at the scene before you all.  "Report, Corporal," he says, and as his eyes flick to Mari, adds, "Include the presence of this ghost."
79
"Lieutenant Colonel Alarich Karlach, in his majesty's service," the man replies as he tucks the charcoal stick away again and ties a ribbon around the letter in lieu of sealing it with wax.  "Delighted to make your acquaintance, Master...?"

As Karlach speaks he is making his way over to the courier, and hands the letter to him along with a galifar.  "Please see this delivered with all haste; dismissed," he tells him.
80
"All three?" he murmurs, but seems content to leave the subject for now.

FOR NOW]

"Eladrin, why are you hiding beneath a blanket?" the newcomer asks idly, still focused on his writing.
82
"Finally," Astra grouses, then leads her clawfoot off in the direction of the tiny stable, carefully skirting the burning building.  "Yell for me if the forest catches, yeah?" she calls back over her shoulder.
83
[Astra Endurance, which I am really gonna miss: 10+10+2=22]
84
"Thanks," Astra says with a glare at the needle, which she tosses back in her little sewing kit before kneeling down and bracing the manacles on a rock for the drover.
85
"May your dealings be ever prosperous, and the paths before you paved in gold," the man replies in perfect Dwarven as he swings down from his horse, tethering it to the fence blocking off access to the lightning rail.  He tucks what you originally took to be a riding crop under his arm as he dismounts, showing it to be a thicker, more sturdy rod of black metal chased with designs in gold and silver.  He then leans against a post and pulls what looks to be a letter and a thin stick of charcoal from a beltpouch, resting the paper against a bracer on his left arm and carefully starting to write near the bottom of the page.

Astra, apparently done waiting, grunts out something that might be a greeting at the man before slowly hobbling her way over to her clawfoot and digging in the saddlebags for a needle to try picking the lock on her manacles  Then again when she fails.  And again.

[Thievery: 11, 11, 3, 12, 11, 5, 7, 13... + 5 = Astra's gonna be at this awhile!]

"I do hope that I am not interrupting anything," an amused voice breaks in, as another person joins the group gathering outside the burning inn.  A tall human on a horse, with streaks of grey at his temples showing beneath his black helm set with dull green gems, he is dressed in thick, luxurious furs with impeccably shining boots, and bears no obvious weapons.  "I gather that the inn is closed at present?  Courier, you may wait for my leave," he states, holding up a gloved hand to halt the man without looking at him.

Faint, vaguely menacing shadows swirl around the man as he rides up, blurring the edges of his figure and only fading away ten or fifteen seconds after he halts.  Olegov and Mari can feel the sensation of evil gently wafting off him as he draws near.

[Intimidate to get the courier to wait before departing: 10+13+2=25

Also, he's actually, like, moderately evil but "...of low to mid level evil gently wafting..." sounds stupid, so.]
87
"'Scuse me," I say loudly, holding up my still-manacled hands and jingling them pointedly.
88
[We should probably wait for Diogenes before moving too far ahead at this point.]
89
"Hey," I shout furiously, glaring at Pepper as she takes hold of the manacles.  "Aint your call if those come off him or not.  Or you decide you just dont gotta do nothing our employer says no more but what you like, huh?"
90
I turn my back on the others briefly so I'm facing Pepper, then let my eyes slide to Valenae as I mouth VAMPIRE at her.  After a moment I bare my teeth to show off the pointy ones and make little claw hands, too.
91
My mouth twists as I consider telling the woman that one good stab'll probably drive it away for a couple hours if she's worried, but it feels vaguely disloyal after the recent events.  Disloyal, I think incredulously.  Disloyal to a godsdamned ghost of all things.  Watch it, woman.

"Yeah, it's a ghost, but it aint currently attacking anyone, so how about we get me and the dwarf outta these chains so we can keep you safe if it starts attacking, yeah?" I suggest.  My eyes flick to the vampire still hovering in the doorway of the inn, his own manacles back now that he's no longer a bat, and add, my tone a polite suggestion and my eyes on the captain, "Just you and me, if you like?"
92
"Shut the fuck up," I snarl at the innkeeper before turning to the newcomers and making an effort to calm myself.  "Can any of you three pick locks?  Or got a crowbar, maybe?"
93
[You can recharge encounter powers by having a short rest.]
94
[How fast can Val hop in manacles, incidentally?]
95
I take a deep breath, my head close to the floor, and wriggle my way over to the door.  Done what I could for the other two when I'm still chained up like this, and I gotta get out before I pass out.

[Endurance: 11+10=21!]
96
I kick the captain's chair over as well, trying to break it too.  "Hey!" I roar after the fleeing innkeeper.  "Get your godsdamned useless arse back in here and help us, or you'll be answering to me!"

[Athletics: 8+11=19
Intimidate: 11+2=13

eta: Aden, don't forget that each time you end your turn in direct sunlight, you take 10 radiant damage, and if this drops you below 1hp, you are dead permanently!]
97
They didn't take our non-weapon inventories, right?  Did anyone bring lockpicks, by any chance?  I think most of Astra's stuff is out with her clawfoot.
98
Okay, obviously Mari and Val can escape okay, so long as we can get a window or the door open for Val to fly out through.  Getting out of manacles is ... Acrobatics, but that takes 5 minutes of uninterrupted effort apparently, or you can do it as a standard action at the cost of increasing the (hard) DC by 5.  Pepper could manage it if she got lucky, but that's it.  Astra's got decent STR, but breaking actual manacles is probably pretty difficult.  She can likely get the door open, at least?  And if she gets free, she should be able to drag someone out.

eta: I've also got Endurance trained; maybe I can use that to buy extra time, however that'd work in this situation?

TELL THAT TO EVERYONE ELSE WHO'S BEEN DROPPING OUT OF PORTALS RECENTLY

If I were a bug, I could scuttle at full speed even while prone.
