"I assure you," I say to Palatinate while untucking my beard braids from my gambeson, "Karlach's letter of introduction bore all the marks of authenticity. I would not have surrendered command of this unit were it otherwise."

"Now," I say, turning to Karlach, "Palatinate makes an accurate evaluation of the state of our mission's secrecy. And in fact, it raises some interesting questions that I would ask you, Karlach, as the more experienced officer."

Between my fingers, I turn one of my beard braid rings, considering.

"Why would the general send our team on a mission with the parameter of secrecy that was impossible for it to fulfill?"
2
"Of course, Palatinate. In fact, given the nature of our mission, you may set aside that aspect of protocol as well. Civvies tend not to ask permission to speak freely."
3
"Now," I continue.  "Our work for the day.  This is the obvious route towards our destination, and it may be that we can find some information on those lost soldiers here - what do we know of them at present?"
"A few months back, the other team was lost between here and the tundra north of Lakeside. That team included ir'-Dulinch's son."

I dip another baked egg in ham gravy and take a bite, while looking around at my companions.

"Palatinate, you seem to have something on your mind. Would you like to speak?"

"Now," I say over breakfast in the private dining area, neatly cutting into my gammon steak.  "Explain to me this secret mission business.  You were told to hide your allegiance to the military?"

"Ah, yes," I reply in a soft voice while tucking my beard into my gambeson. "I'm not at all surprised that you would deduce we were on a secret mission, given our lack of insignia or uniform."

I pluck up a baked egg, ensphered in bread crumbs and sausage mince, and take a bite. Steam rises from the remaining half, its center staring back at me like a yellow eye. I chew thoughtfully, drifting momentarily back to the dream of the lake before returning to the matter at hand.

"We were told to respect the chain of command, except for addressing each other by rank or saluting."

I 'toast' Karlach with the remaining half-egg and pop it in my mouth.

D&D / Re: "Winter of our Malcontents" PG & Chat Thread
Hey all, I've been running around this week taking care of my dad and missed the most recent posts. I should be able to jump back in this weekend.
6
That's ok. I've been caught up in other things myself.
7
"Have you served long, Captain?" I ask mildly.
"The first of Rhaan this year marked a decade plus two," I reply. "The time has passed too quickly."

"And you, Colonel? Have you served long?"
8
[I'll take ten on Perception during my watch, too: 17]
9
Ready to roll out.
10
"I see. I... ah... Yes. I do realize that. Hmm..."

I scratch my beard thoughtfully.

"But most who have died tend not to... linger. Do you choose to remain? Are you compelled to remain?"
11
Wow, sorry to hear you took Brexit so hard. ;)

Get well soon.
12
At the sergeant's departure, I find myself standing alone. With a ghost.

"So..."

"...Mari? Is it?"

"Why are you... a ghost?"
13
Reminds me of fetters from Wraith: the Oblivion.
14
"No, that is all, sir. Thank you for the wine. I'll send the sergeant in."

I leave the tent and come upon Palatinate and Mari in conversation. "Pardon the interruption, but the lieutenant colonel wishes to speak with you, sergeant."
15
"I gave orders to surrender--she continued to attack the enemy, putting herself and the whole company at risk that they would reject our surrender and kill us all."
16
"And the girl's suspicions that his... status was unknown?" Karlach asks, refilling Olegov's wine.  "Were you informed?"
"I was not informed, no. We were not briefed on the composition of our company, beyond name and rank."
17
"Now," says Karlach, once Astra is gone.  "Where were we?  Ah, yes; you were about to tell me of this vampire under my command who may view his subordinates as provisions, yes, Captain?"
"Corporal Valenae? Oh sure, he's a vampire. But you don't rise in the ranks quaffing one's compatriots."

I take a long draught of wine. "At least, not without permission. Still, it's probably best to find out if what Astra says was an idle threat or not on the part of the corporal."
18
"Positively the Silver Flame. But Thranians I couldn't say. Palatinate, could you place the accent?"
19
"The Silver Flame!" I exclaim, as the scent of game bird permeates the air.

Regarding the charred squab on plank, I turn to Palatinate and say, "Well done, Sergeant."
20
"Yes, hmm... yes," I ponder, turning the crystal tumbler in my hand, its facets sparkling from the nearby flames. "They spoke of the 'Divine Light' and wielded radiance as a weapon against us. They spoke of us as heathen, though in their midst I had introduced myself to the innkeeper as a priest of Kol Korran.  So I would assume they were not believers of the Sovereign Host. Their accents..."

to try to puzzle out accents, and behavior of our captors as it may relate to religion]
21
"By their accents, they were not from Karrn. They were well-armed, disciplined, and religious. They did address each other by name... Atrelioth... Zoder... Tarravan... though they could be code-names. Also, beyond our own king's interest in the artifact, and the purported rebel faction, a death cult has interest in the artifact as well, so they said."
22
I nod in approval of the offered wine. "Yes, a rumor, I say, and not a fact, since no evidence was given. Our captors said there are factions within Karrnath that oppose the king, and named the general as a member of one of those factions."
23
"As an unordained priest of the Sovereign Host, I suppose I ought to have qualms about the nature of our mission."

I unconsciously raise a hand to grasp the holy symbol behind my beard.

"However, as Kol Korran is my patron, I recognize there are--economic advantages to the dead serving after they have lived. One could even argue it would be more ethical to have the dead fight our wars than the living."

"As a chaplain," I ponder, turning the golden disk in my hand, "I do wonder if the young soldier Astra has been... sheltered from these realities. Taking risks is admirable, especially when they are commensurate with hazard pay. But I am concerned she has taken on more than is bearable, and may be better off relieved of duty and returned home."

"No, I have no qualms about our mission objective. There was... a rumor those foreign brigands told..."
24
"We were shown a sketch of it from a old textbook," I say while taking a seat. "It would be difficult to judge its size based on the sketch, as no scale was given, but its form appeared to be roughly rod-shaped and baroquely decayed. The general said the artifact was necromantic in nature."

"As an officer, I take it you have no qualms with necromancy? Our undead reserves, for example?"
25
I nod at Palatinate before joining Karlach in the tent. "General ir'Dulinch gave us orders to explore the mountain source of Iceflow River, north of Lakeside, to recover an artifact called Object 17. And to locate and recover lost personnel who failed to return from earlier missions with the same objective."
