The ghost woman's face is mere centimetres from mine. The translucency makes me slightly queasy from this close up. I look down at the others. "Who's the strongest of you? Get up here and see if you can shift the weight."

I climb down rapidly to give whoever accepts the challenge room.

[yes, but she's not a grunt, lol

I'd ask for an athletics check if we're just trying to deadlift it, FWIW

plus an acrobatics to balance on the ladder]

I eye the spindly ladder, then with a slight sigh, sheathe my weapons again and climb up.  Once at the top, I knock firmly on the trapdoor.

You hear a scraping sound, then a male voice, muffled through the door:

"If this is another godsdamned skeleton, you'll be sorry."

"Soldier Astra, sir, with Major Leatherleaf's company!" I call back.

The trapdoor swings open and bright daylight, cold crisp air, and a lot of flurries, hit you in the face.  An older half-elf with weathered skin, unkempt hair, and a corporal's pips peers down at you.  He offers you a hand up.

I accept the hand, climbing the rest of the way out of the caverns, then take a deep breath of the fresher air as I look around, blinking at the brightness of the sun.

Oh for... I practically fly up the ladder, blinking rapidly in the blinding light. "Why the hells was this trapdoor closed and weighted, soldier! Were you not expecting our party?"

"Concealment of a classified egress, ma'am!" he says snappily, saluting.  It is all perfectly correct, but you get the vague impression he's being sarcastic.

Also they open it if you knock, I think.

"Good thinking from the Soldier there," I say to Sarge, "sort of brains we need on a mission like this, wouldn't you say ma'am?"

I once again climb the ladder and join the others above.

I glare at the elf, then take a deep breath. "Indeed it was. Well done, soldier." I am way too tired to be as kind to the keeper of the trap door, but I refrain from berating him. "Please show us our supplies and requisitioned gear then, corporal."

The lookout point has a small cabin - hut, really - and a covered platform with spyglasses affixed and a lit brazier for warmth.  There is also what looks to be a pyre atop a tall, thin tower.  It looks out on gently rolling, but rocky and inhospitable, hills, now dusted in white.

There is a picket line with five saddled clawfoots (clawfeet?) tethered and one with a pack harness; they snap and twist and let out the occasional grating squeal, as is a clawfoot's wont.  There are also a few large cases, including the one obviously just shifted off the trap door.

The corporal is the only person immediately visible besides your party.

"Yes ma'am!" he says.  "Here, ma'am!"  Again the vague undercurrent of a joke, although you couldn't say exactly what gives his response that air.  He gestures at the cases, opening the one nearest him.  "Lieutenant Zecklin says you're to outfit yourselves out of this gear and supplies, ma'am!"

"Any of it, sir?" I ask as I drift over, my eyes on some rather nicer armour than mine.  I pick up a helm with wickedly sharp antlers at the front and try it on.  Guess I do need to trade my stuff in if we're pretending we're not army.

I shoulder my weapon and whistle Creon to my side.  I look the Corporal up and down with my eyes.  "She lacks discipline.  But she got the job done.  Keep her in line, Corporal, and maybe she'll get to the end alive."

Whatever that end may be.

"Now, let's inspect the provisions the General has left us."

Fuck you, and fuck your insults, you self-important bitch, I think as I pull out an exceptionally light and well-balanced sword with an odd curve at the end of the blade, and briefly indulge in a fantasy of splitting the sergeant's skull with a neat sideways throw.  Instead I eye a target set up nearby thoughtfully.  It's heaps bigger than my axes, but at this weight...  I let fly with the sword, eyes widening as it takes a chunk out of the front before flying right back at me, but automatically catch it with a delighted cackle.  "Dibs!" I call out to no one in particular, stripping off my longsword and tossing it into the supply box.

"That's what it's there for," he tells Astra, then to everyone, "You're also to leave all uniforms, insignia, and other indicators of army membership here."

He's old for a corporal and this is not a desirable posting in terms of hopes of advancement, but it's a position of trust, as is the fact that he's aware on any level of your mission.  He seems unimpressed by the lot of you, and not terribly curious about what you're doing or where you're going, for whatever reason.

He was definitely being sarcastic.

And he didn't react to Mari with the surprise one would expect.

"Yes ma'am!" I reply smartly. "Ma'am, permission to just remove insignia from my armour ma'am. I've had it for a few years and it is well worn in, ma'am."

"Do you have some kind of disease?"  the corporal asks Valenae, eyeballing the mask and gloves and taking a step away.

"You been here awhile, sir?" I ask the old corporal as I start changing my armour.  "With the general and all?"
