Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishers that Accept Unsolicited Submissions

This is a partial list of publishers and submission requirements in my areas of interest as a writer.

Independent Publishers

Baen

  • Based in the US
  • It’s thought that they pay above the market rate
  • Length preference is 100k to 130k
  • Ask that submissions be accompanied by a synopsis
  • Prefer online submissions
  • Due to high volume, it can take 9 to 12 months to hear back
  • They prefer exclusive submissions, and ask that they be notified right away if a submission is accepted elsewhere

BelleBooks/BelleBridge

  • Based in the US
  • Submissions should come via a query email with a brief synopsis, attached manuscript, and attached detailed synopsis
  • Length prefernce is 50k words and up
  • It can take 3 to 6 months to hear back
  • Detailed submission guidelines are here
  • SF/Fantasy submissions are currently closed

Edge

  • Based in Canada, excellent distribution there and in North America.
  • Prefer authors without agents
  • Have an ePublishing group
  • They try to respond to submissions within 4 months
  • Require exclusive submissions
  • They only accept completed, edited works

Imprint Publishers

DAW (Penguin)

  • Asks for exclusive submissions, but after 3 months you are free to submit elsewhwere.
  • Rarely publish less than 80k words
  • Do not accept electronic submissions
  • Manuscripts will not be returned

Tor/Forge (Macmillan

  • Open submissions policy
  • Submission should be first three chapters or no more than  10,000 words, ending at a paragraph, and a synopsis of the entire book.
  • Do not accept electronic submissions
  • If you don’t hear within 6 months, resubmit

Angry Robot (Formerly HarperCollins, now Watkins Media)

  • Based in the UK, also distributes in the US, Canada, Australia and NZ.
  • Submission should be first three chapters or no more than  10,000 words, ending at a paragraph, and a 2-3 page synopsis of the entire book.
  • Once or twice a year, they have an open door read period.  The last one was in December 2015 – January 2016.  The next one probably won’t be until 2017.  Check this page periodically for information about the next read.
